From Tokyo to Mayfair: The Story and Philosophy of Aragawa

A restaurant's identity is shaped by more than its address. It lives in the ingredients it chooses, the techniques it values and the experience it creates for its guests. Aragawa's story begins in Tokyo and continues in Mayfair, with Tajima beef at its heart.

Aragawa was founded in Tokyo in 1967 and opened its doors in Mayfair on 20 October 2023. That bridge between heritage and a new London home is the key to understanding the restaurant today.

A Heritage Rooted in Tokyo

Aragawa's Tokyo origins connect the London restaurant to a long-standing Japanese steakhouse tradition. Heritage matters most when it shapes today's choices rather than serving as a date on a timeline. For Aragawa, it means an unwavering commitment to exceptional beef and a focused approach to dining. You can read more on our story.

Mayfair, an international destination for dining, business and celebration, is a natural home for that identity, welcoming Londoners and visitors alike.

Tajima Beef at the Centre

Tajima beef is Aragawa's signature. From Hyogo Prefecture in Japan, Tajima cattle are central to the story of Japanese Black cattle and form the foundation of Kobe beef.

Our menu names the Japanese farms behind each cut, currently Okazaki, Tamada and Nishizawa, so provenance is specific rather than a general promise. Read more in from Japanese farm to Mayfair.

Technique in Service of the Ingredient

Under Steak Master Kazuo Imayoshi, our Tajima beef is grilled over Binchotan oak charcoal in a traditional kiln and seasoned only with finely crushed Maldon salt and ground pepper. With so little on the plate, heat, timing and the choice of cut become everything.

The principle is focus. Rather than adding complexity for its own sake, we let the beef remain the centre of the experience. Technique plays a supporting role, and its success is measured by what reaches the table. Discover more in the art of Binchotan.

A Mayfair Experience for Every Occasion

Aragawa welcomes guests for à la carte dining, the Signature Lunch and the tasting menu. For smaller groups seeking a more tailored setting, our private dining room seats 8 to 14 guests.

Whether it is dinner with friends, a celebration or a business meeting, every visit shares the same opportunity: to explore Tajima beef in a setting built around it.

Hospitality and Attention to Detail

A considered restaurant experience depends on more than the plate. Thoughtful advice, attentive service and an understanding of why each guest has come all make a meal feel personal. For a private dinner, that may mean planning the menu and wine together in advance. For a table for two, it may mean explaining the differences between cuts and helping you choose.
